DIY Whipped Body Cream


Store bought lotions were one of the first things I threw out when we started our journey to being more "green". Conventional lotions are full of nasty artificial chemicals that I do not want on my kid's skin or my skin. Our skin is the largest organ of our bodies and I try to avoid putting anything on it that I wouldn't want absorbed into our bodies. I replaced our chemical laden store bought lotions with whipped body cream. I make whipped body cream verses lotion for a few reasons - first, lotion contains water which makes it so that the finished product needs a preservative so that it doesn't mold; these preservatives are usually artificial so I didn't want to use them. Second, whipped body cream is luxurious feeling! Here is the recipe that I use:


   Whipped Body Cream

                           Half Recipe                Whole Recipe
                      about 5 - 4 oz jars      about 10-11 - 4 oz jars
Shea Butter              8 oz.                             16 oz. 
Coconut Oil             2 oz.                              4 oz. 
Liquid Oil*              1 1/2 oz.                        3 oz. 
Vitamin E oil            20 drops                        40 drops
Cornstarch               6 tsp.                            12 tsp. 
Essential Oils      personal preference       personal preference

Note: For oil, I either use herbal infused olive oil or sweet almond oil. Both work great, it just depends on what I have on hand. For Vitamin E oil I just poke a Vitamin E capsule and squeeze it into the body cream. For essential oils the amount depends on your oils and how strong you want the scent to be. 

Directions: Put a metal mixing bowl in the freezer before starting (I use my KitchenAid Stand Mixer). Measure all ingredients according to weight. In a double boiler (see pictures on how I make a double boiler) heat shea butter over low heat until melted (it should be cool enough to put your finger into without being burned). Turn off the stove. Add coconut oil. In a separate bowl, mix half of the cornstarch with the liquid oil, stir with a fork until smooth. Add the liquid oil/cornstarch mixture to the shea butter/coconut oil in the double boiler. Stir. Pour into cold mixing bowl and put in the freezer for about ten minutes. Remove from freezer, add vitamin E oil. Scrape sides of bowl with rubber spatula. Mix for 10 minutes on medium to high speed with whisk attachment. Put in freezer another 10 minutes. Scrape sides of bowl with rubber spatula. Mix for 10 minutes. Repeat about four times or until mixture is fluffy. Slowly add remaining cornstarch; mix. Add essential oils now if you are scenting the whole batch. Beat another 2 minutes or until essential oils are thoroughly distributed. Freeze three to five minutes. Put into jars. If scenting individual jars, add essential oils to each jar now. 

Here is my make shift double boiler. Fill the bottom pan with water :)




Mix the cornstarch with the liquid oil.

This is what it looks like after being whipped a couple of times.

Put finished body cream into jars :)

    1. I don't refrigerate mine and I've had some in my cupboard for about a year and it's still fine.
