{review} Magickal Bottom’s Hybrid Fitted Cloth Diaper Review

Magickal Bottom’s provided me with this diaper for review purposes.

Last week I shared with you a Magickal Bottom’s AI2 cloth diaper (You can read the review here). This week I want to show you their hybrid fitted diaper. But first I want to show you some other things Trisha has in her shop that I’ve been drooling over!

The Diaper
Magickal Bottom’s sent me this hybrid fitted cloth diaper to review. The outside is made from a cotton knit that is hand dyed, it has a hidden Windpro DWR fleece layer, and the inside of the diaper is a soft cotton velour. The soaker is  snap in snake soaker made out of Super Heavy Organic Bamboo Fleece topped with the same soft cotton velour that is lining the diaper. The edges of the diaper are serged with colorful rainbow thread. It is a beautiful diaper!

I asked Trisha what the benefit is of using a hybrid fitted diaper verses using an AI2. The main difference is that a hybrid fitted diaper is breathable because it does not have a layer of PUL on the outside (PUL is a laminated fabric that is waterproof). A hybrid fitted diaper is made with Windpro fleece which is water repellant (due to the tight weave of the fleece) but not waterproof like PUL. Using Windpro fleece makes liquid less likely and slower to leak through the diaper to the outer layer than a normal standard fitted diaper, but it is not completely waterproof like an AI2/AIO. Hybrid fitted diapers are designed to be used coverless around the house to help babies avoid rashes and to be used with a cover at night.

 Sizing and Closures
The diaper is one size – it is adjustable by using a fold down rise. It has snap closures and cross over snaps to accommodate smaller babies. My 25 pound 36 inch tall toddler wears it folded down and still has tons of growing room (see Fitting Your Fluff for pictures).

My Review and Star Ratings:
Absorbency (Night Time Use)
5 stars
We have been using this diaper on my toddler at night, and as long as we use a cover with it we haven’t had any leaks (I’ll share with you a Magickal Bottom’s Cover in the near future). We wouldn’t be able to use it over night without a cover because it is soaked in the morning, but I really like that we haven’t had any leaks with the hybrid fitted/cover combination. This combination is definitely a great night time solution for us.

Trisha says that her hybrid fitted diapers usually last about 4 hours during the day without a cover before they start to leak through the hidden Windpro Fleece layer. I’m looking forward to trying this out on our new baby when she is older.

Water Test: I poured one cup of water on the soaker towards the front tummy panel. The soaker was completely saturated in that area and the inside of the diaper was wet but it held it all and still didn't feel wet on the outside of the diaper. I know that this isn't a very scientific test to measure how much moisture a diaper holds, but I was amazed that this diaper would hold that much water, let alone hold that much and not feel wet on the outside!

Fit/Size
4 stars
Magickal Bottom’s hybrid fitted diaper fits my 25 pound 36 inch tall toddler on the lower rise setting. It is a pretty large diaper and is wide between the legs and through the bum. When my husband first saw it, he asked if it was made for a 5 year old :) However, the diaper is really squishy and soft and it doesn't seem to bother my toddler that it is so bulky (most other bulky diapers he tells me are too tight and he doesn't like wearing them). The elastic fits snugly around his legs and we don’t have any leg gaps.

I asked Trisha about the size of the diaper and she did tell me that her diapers with a fold down rise are bigger than her diapers with a snap down rise. Her hybrid fitted diapers with rise snaps will be about the same size as the AI2 that I reviewed previously. If I purchase a hybrid fitted from her in the future (which I plan to do), I think I am going to opt for the smaller fit with the rise snaps since I tend to have smaller babies. If you have a large baby/toddler, I would recommend going with the fold down rise. The next picture shows the different between the size of the fold down rise hybrid fitted and the size of the snap down rise AI2. The back diaper (with the blue showing) is the larger hybrid fitted with the fold down rise and the front diaper (the one with the Ooga Booga print showing) is the smaller AI2 with the snap down rise.

Thickness/Bulkiness
3 stars
Magickal Bottom’s Hybrid Fitted diaper is a pretty thick diaper (at no fault of Trisha’s - that’s just how the materials are; Windpro Fleece is a lot thicker than PUL). The fold down rise diaper is bulkier than I expected, but like I said before, because of the softness and flexibility of the diaper, it hasn’t bothered my toddler at all. He does have to wear big PJs though in order to wear the diaper and the cover.

Aesthetic Design
5 stars
I absolutely love the hand dyed stars on the outside of the diaper. The rainbow colors are vivid and beautiful and the rainbow serger thread looks great with the tie-dye. I have never been a tie dye fan before but I absolutely love this diaper!

Price
3 stars
At $25, the cost of this diaper is a little more than I would like to pay for most cloth diapers. However, it is in line and average with what most WAHMs charge for hybrid fitted diapers. Hybrid fitted diapers cost more than most AI2s/AIOs because of material costs; a hybrid fitted diaper has three layers plus a soaker while an AI2 has two layers plus a soaker and Windpro Fleece is a lot more expensive than most PUL.

Overall
4 stars
I give Magickal Bottom’s Hybrid Fitted diaper a 4 stars overall. It works great for night time use, it is super cute and soft, the fabric has stayed soft even after being lined dried, the construction and the fabrics are high quality, and the fabrics do not hold odors. The elastic is tight, the snaps work great, and we get a great fit. The only thing that would make this diaper a 5 star diaper is if it cost a little less or if it was already waterproof without having to add a separate cover. However, I don’t think it would be possible to make this diaper with a hidden layer of PUL or it would be way too thick to sew. I have been seriously considering purchasing another one with a snap down rise for night time use and so I can try the smaller diaper on our baby once she is here. I definitely recommend Magickal Bottom's Hybrid Fitted Diapers.

  8. Seeing all these diapers you post make me wish we had cloth diapers like this back when my kids were in them. Cloth diapers back then were so much uglier, bulkier, and more of a hassle.

  11. I've never tried hybrid fitteds. I like how they can be used coverless for short times, or also with a cover for overnight. So cute, too.

  18. Out of all the ones you've reviewed, this one looks the sturdiest and thickest! That would be my concern with using a cloth diaper, ya know?

  23. i've never tried a fitted. i don't like that i have to buy every size vs. one sized diapers & they are so darn cute- i don't want to cover them up--- but it seems like unless they are worn only for short periods around the house- we'd need a cover :( but i'd love to give it a go & see if it's better than i imagine :) people do seem to love them

  25. I have never tried a hybrid diaper. I have only ever used pockets. I'm interested in trying all the types!

  26. I have not tried a Hybrid Diaper. From reading your review I understand it to be a breathable diaper without the (PUL) waterproof material. I think if it is very absorbent that wouldn't be a problem. It almost sounds healthier to wear. I can say this Magikal Bottom with the Tie Dye and Stars looks like a work of art not just a diaper. Thanks for a "real" review its hard to believe the reviews where everything is perfect. I like to know all of it. What's a issue for one would be fine for another. Its good to know.
