Kushy Tooshy is owned and ran by a WAHM named Kylie. She started sewing diapers after her son was born in an effort to save money. She wanted to create a product that was high quality and yet reasonably priced since most cloth diapers were way out of her price range. Kylie loves to sew and she loves saving her customers money. She also makes mama cloth, cloth wipes, nursing pads, and various types of cloth diapers.
Kushy Tooshy sent me two of her covers to review (size medium and large for our toddler) and a newborn sized pocket diaper to review. Her covers are made with a cute cotton outer layer and a hidden layer of PUL to make them waterproof. The pocket diaper is made out of a cotton outer, a hidden layer of PUL, and a soft suede cloth inner. This review is for the covers since our newborn isn't here yet.
Kushy Tooshy makes her covers and diapers in the following sizes: newborn, small, medium, and large. The newborn covers are designed to fit a weight range from 4.5 to 10 pounds; small should fit approximately 8-20 pounds; medium 17-28 pounds, and large 25-32 pounds. All covers (except newborn) come with rise snaps so that they can be adjusted to smaller size if needed.
The covers are made using snap closures with cross over snaps. Hook and loop closure is available upon request.
My Review and Star Ratings:
The covers worked like they were designed to – they kept moisture away from clothing. Right now we are only cloth diapering our toddler for night time and nap time so we didn't experience any messes (our newborn will be here in July so I’ll update this review as we get to use the covers on her). When we used the cover for night time use, we had a few minor (very minor) wicking issues, but nothing that caused me any concern. The only thing that would make them more leak proof is if they didn't have a cotton outer layer, but then they wouldn't be as cute!
Fit and Size
The medium cover fit my 25 pound 36 inch toddler better than the large for day time use. The large cover worked better for night time use; although, it was not quite big enough to fit over some of our bulky hybrid fitted diapers. I usually left the rise snaps unsnapped on the large cover (so it was as large as possible) for night time use. I like that these covers are trim between the legs yet large enough to provide adequate coverage over bulky inserts.
The only thing I would change is that I wish the covers came with wing snaps as we did have wing droop with Kushy Tooshy covers. However, this did not affect their function, just how they looked on. UPDATE: Kylie said after hearing our feedback, she has added wing snaps to her covers!
I love the festive Fourth of July prints that Kylie made our diapers out of. She also has lots of cute fabrics to choose from. Here are some of the other diapers that she has made:
Kushy Tooshy diapers are super affordable – at only $8.99 per cover, these are about the most inexpensive covers that I have found, especially from a WAHM. Her other prices for her other diaper are very reasonably priced as well.
We have enjoyed having these covers in our stash. They work fine, are well priced, are cute, and support a WAHM. The only thing I think I would change is to have the whole cover be made out of PUL and not have a cotton outer layer to avoid what little wicking leaks we did have.
