The Sexy Vegan's Happy Hour at Home and {Recipe} for Green Bean Fries!

This year one of our goals is to be healthier and one way that we have been working to achieve this is by eating less meat. Now I am not writing this to debate the whole meat issue. I am not against eating meat or animal products, in fact our family enjoys eating animal foods, however I do not believe that meat should be consumed in the quantities that our current society deems as healthy. I believe that meat should be eaten sparingly. But that is a conversation for another day. Now back to the topic at hand.... 

We have been eating less meat (which helps our food budget too!) and since it is normally my job to cook I have been looking for vegan/vegetarian recipes so that we will actually enjoy our meatless meals instead of just drudging through it. And we have been lovin’ it thanks to The Sexy Vegan’s Happy Hour at Home by Brian L. Patton. This cookbook has introduced us to a whole new way of cooking and eating.

I never knew eating meatless could be this good; even my husband doesn’t complain! Green Bean Fries with Tahini Dipping Sauce.... Amazing and probably one of my new favorite foods! Grilled Pineapple Salad... Wonderful! Samaosa Pizzas with Tamarind Date Chutney and mint Chutney... A mouthful to say but heavenly tasting! Grilled Basil-Mint Watermelon Skewers.... I never would have thought to grill watermelon but it was surprisingly good! This cookbook introduced me to a lot of spices and healthy foods that I had never heard of and has shown me that vegan can be delicious.
I own a lot of cookbooks and I’ve read even more, and I love how The Sexy Vegan’s Happy Hour is laid out. Each “menu” has includes a main course dish, an appetizer like food (we eat it as a side, not as an appetizer), dessert, and drink recommendations. Some of the “menus” are even based on ethnic foods from other countries like Tokyo and India.

One of my pet peeves for a cookbook is when it says use “peanut sauce” or “pizza crust” or whatever but it doesn’t tell you how to make this item. I absolutely hate getting out all my other cookbooks in order to finish up the recipe. But Patton doesn’t do this to me! I love that he includes how to make most of the ingredients from scratch. But of course if you want to buy Pizza dough crust at the store you can do that as well.

I wish that the pictures in this cookbook would have been in color. However the author does have a YouTube channel which I enjoyed watching. (Visit www.thesexyvegan.com for more info).

I’ve been taking pictures to show you but something crazy happened with my phone last week and I lost all my photos from the past two months (Ugg! But yet again this is a conversation for another day) So instead I am going to share with you one of my favorite recipes!



Green Bean Fries with Tahini Dipping Sauce

Canola, peanut, or any other high-heat oil, for deep-frying
One 12-fluid-ounce bottle beer
1 cup unbleached all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon Sexy Sprinkle (recipe follows), plus more for dusting
1/2 cup arrowroot
6 ounces green beans, trimmed
Tahini Dipping Sauce (recipe follows) for dipping
Preheat the oven to 200°F. Line a plate with paper towels and set it next to the stove. Pour oil to a depth of 1 1/2 to 2 inches in a pot, high-sided pan, or deep fryer that is wide enough to fit the longest of your green beans. Heat the oil over medium-high heat until it registers 350°F on a deep-frying thermometer.

In a large bowl, whisk together the beer, flour, and 1/2 teaspoon Sexy Sprinkle. Put the arrowroot in another bowl. Toss the green beans in the arrowroot until lightly coated. Working in batches, dip several of the green beans in the beer batter, allowing the excess batter to fall away.

Place the green beans directly in the hot oil, being careful not to crowd the pot. Use a slotted metal spatula or tongs to make sure that the beans don’t stick to the pot bottom or to each other. Fry the green beans for 2 to 3 minutes, or until golden brown. Using a spatula or tongs, transfer the green beans to the paper towel–lined plate. Dust them immediately with a liberal amount of the Sexy Sprinkle, and keep warm in the oven.

Fry the remaining green beans in the same way, allowing the oil to return to 350°F before each batch. Serve on a platter, or in one of those cool french fry–cone things, with the Tahini Dipping Sauce on the side.


The Sexy Sprinkle
1 teaspoon granulated garlic or garlic powder
1 teaspoon granulated onion or onion powder
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1 teaspoon unrefined granulated sugar
1/2 teaspoon nutritional yeast
1 teaspoon salt
Whisk all the ingredients together until combined. If you don’t use all the sprinkle right away, store the remainder in an airtight container for later use.


Tahini Dipping Sauce
2/3 cup tahini
2 garlic cloves
4 teaspoons fresh lime juice
1/2 cup roughly chopped fresh tarragon
1 cup water
2 teaspoons agave nectar
Pinch of cayenne pepper
Salt and black pepper
In a food processor or blender, process the tahini, garlic, lime juice, tarragon, water, agave nectar, and cayenne pepper until smooth. Add more water, if needed, to achieve your desired consistency.

Season with salt and black pepper to taste. In addition to dipping your Green Bean Fries in it, use this sauce to smear all over the tiny buns for the Yamburger Sliders (see recipe, page 38).

  3. The recipe sounds delicious. My daughter is vegetarian so enjoys making things like these. I've been trying to cut back on meat eating as well and I agree you do save a bit more money with the price for steak now. :)

  4. Yummo! We'll have to try this recipe! We used to have meatless Monday in our household, but now we are meatless Monday through Thursday! I don't know if we could do the whole vegetarian lifestyle... I do like meat :)

  9. I don't like to fry foods-actually don't like the taste of fried foods--unusual I know. However I'm sure there are lots of recipes in this cookbook that don't require frying!
